#BookReview – Grey by E. J. James – Guest Review by Shay

SOOOOO…. Let me start by telling you that I loved.. yes LOVED.. past tense.. FSoG when I first read the series… I heard about this “Mommy Porn” and was super curious.. and devoured the book in three days… I don’t remember sleeping.. I do remember coffee… but I LOVED them.. they spoke to the feisty female in me…

Since then I have tried to go back and re-read the series and decided that Anastasia’s inner goddess and my inner goddess do not like each other…

Then I heard that Grey was coming out I was beyond excited to finally get into Christian’s head…

but then I started reading it… and I wanted out…

In the previous books… Christian Grey seemed like a strong.. powerful… confidant…mysterious… dominant man… you knew he had a rough past… it made him the man he was… the mystery was sexy… made you wanna be in his bed.. in his red room.. but in Grey he lacked confidence… and sounded like a bratty 18 year old college boy with a trust fund pretending to run a company…

He lost his sex appeal… the mystery was gone… and his lack of confidence was so unattractive… his inner goddess (yes inner goddess) did nothing for me…

He didn’t sound powerful and in control… he was a mess.. There were moments where I was into it and then I was back in his head and the thrill was gone…

I honestly believe James forgot who Christian was… she forgot the man she made millions fall in love with… the moments that were sexy and intriguing… lost their appeal.. I wanted to be in that elevator… I wanted my first time to be that intense… and lets not forget the piano.. the boat.. the BOATHOUSE.. the desk.. did I mention that elevator… that elevator did it for me…

SO I stopped.. I didn’t wanna ruin that rest…

I had hoped we would get a peak into how Christian became the man he is… his history… retelling the same story… with not much added (well from what I read) was redundant… and I was warned about this from a friend of mine… but I obviously didn’t listen… I am a little disappointed I’m not gonna lie… but maybe I expected tooo much… who knows… I wish it was better…

Was FSoG the best series I’ve ever read… no… but they opened me to this new reading world… Christian and Anastasia’s love story was captivating… I couldn’t put the books down… I wanted this broke man and unsure girl to fall and hold onto each other.. I wanted them to have a happy ending…I didn’t care about the editing or that Anastasia worked my nerves at times… but this..

So I won’t.. and I’m ok with that… Grey was deleted off my iPad unfinished..

  1. Awesome review and I Love the gifs! I have to admit I have a hate/hate relationship with this author. I just think her writing is atrocious and her characters unlikeable. Christian started giving me the creeps about 50 pages into the first book, and I found myself wanting to slap Anastasia repeatedly, which is why I only read the one and never picked up the other two. In my humble opinion there’s much better erotica out there.

    1. Shay did an amazing job! The gifs had me crying laughing and I begged her to post it here. I’m not as big a fan of the series as I was originally. I much prefer Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and Vanessa Fewings Enthrall series. Both are very well written and delve into the real BDSM lifestyle.
