#BookReview: Beast: A Hate Story, The Beginning Hate Story Duet #1

Beast Teaser 1

Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.

I thought selling myself to a mafia boss was noble. So what if they called him the Beast? I grew up in rags, and he would lift me to riches. All I had to do was give him my soul.

He was punishing. Insatiable. Captivating. Nothing like I expected him to be. Each day my reality blurred, leaving me wondering if I was slave or princess.

The longer I stayed, the more I lost myself to him. Even after every cruelty the Beast visited upon me, I longed for his touch. Even after every savage word he spoke, I begged for his lips. I thought the worst thing he could take was my body. I was too naïve to guard my heart.

Once upon a time, I thought love was a fairytale.

Now I know better than to speak of happily ever afters.

Beast is the first book in the Hate Story duet. About what it means to fall in love with the person who has absolutely destroyed you, it contains disturbing and graphic situations that may be a trigger for some.

Beast Ebook Cover

I received an ARC ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t even know where to begin. I guess I’ll start by saying thank you to Mary Catherine. I’ve had the great pleasure of being able to call her friend for two years now. She is a remarkable human being. She consistently pushes breaks glass ceilings with her raw words. She holds nothing back, Beast is no exception.

It’s obvious from the first page that Beast: A Hate Story is going to invoke emotions that will make you uncomfortable. A woman has sacrificed herself for her family. This isn’t new, woman do this all the time, but few are faced with the fact that their sacrifice could cost them their lives. Frankie is no exception, or is she?

The Beast is a man that has spent his life fighting his entire life for his life, literally. He is a man of little words and big actions. He says what he means and means what he says. He doesn’t take hostages but is Frankie his exception?

Beast is used to people being afraid of him, he prefers it that way, he likes it. Defiance is not in his vocabulary, at least it wasn’t. He took Frankie as payment to use and abuse as he saw fit. I don’t think he expected to have this captive captivate him. What will be his cost in the end?

The tension and drama surrounding the people in this book is intense. Frankie is a strong woman. I truly believe that throughout the entire book we’re only getting a small piece of exactly who she’s going to be. This experience is going to change her, it’s going to mold her in fire and forge a woman of steel.

I experienced an array of emotions while reading this book. I felt anxious in the beginning. What was in store for Frankie? There was no turning back, would she survive her captivity?  Would she escape? After a while it was anger and frustration but also completely understanding. Guilt was also a strong emotion throughout the read. How could I enjoy what I was reading? This wasn’t a love story at all, it was ugly and very Stockholm.

But who has the Stockholm syndrome, me or Frankie? I’m not going to give too much away. I want you to read the book and have the same experience I did. It definitely has some triggers, so if you’re not able to read about rape, kidnapping, subjugation, violence, etc then you are going to want to skip this book all together.

But if you’re able to read all that and remember to breathe (I forgot several times) then I highly suggest you jump on to this band wagon.
